Diagnostic Hearing Assessments

Our ears and hearing are deeply connected—when one is affected, the other often is too.  A diagnostic hearing assessment is not only essential for identifying the degree and nature of hearing loss but also for understanding where the problem originates within the ear. This knowledge helps guide the most effective treatment or management options.

Our ear is a sophisticated system made up of three main parts, each playing a vital role in how we hear:

  •  Outer Ear: Consists of the pinna (the visible part of the ear) and the ear canal. It collects sound waves and directs them towards the eardrum.
  •  Middle Ear:    The middle ear contains the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and three tiny bones known as the ossicles—the malleus, incus, and stapes. These structures act as amplifiers, transmitting sound vibrations to the inner ear. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps to equalise air pressure, which is important for comfortable and efficient hearing.
  •  Inner Ear:  The inner ear houses the cochlea, a spiral-shaped organ that converts sound vibrations into electrical signals which are sent to the brain. It also contains the vestibular (balance) system, which helps you maintain equilibrium and spatial orientation.

Because these three sections work together, symptoms like hearing loss or ear fullness can originate from any part of the ear. A comprehensive diagnostic assessment helps pinpoint where the issue lies, whether it's in the outer, middle, or inner ear, and how significant

For example, if hearing loss stems from a middle ear condition, medical treatment may be appropriate. However, if it is due to damage to the inner ear, hearing aids are often the recommended solution.

By understanding the source of the problem, we can provide personalised advice and guide you towards the most suitable solutions for your hearing health.
